Who am I, and why I am here?
If you are reading this, that means you ended up on my medium profile.
Welcome! Bienvenue! Добро Пожаловать! Willkommen! Laipni Lūdzam!
I hope you will enjoy my storytelling. Feel free to propose a topic for me to write about. Please leave it in the comments section at the bottom of this post.
Who am I?
According to the Cambridge dictionary, I am a millennial. Born in the mid-’80s. There is a lot of contradiction about my entire generation. A great summary is accessible in this Infragistics by Goldman Sachs. Apart from few categories, like house ownership and kids, I am definitely a typical millennial. Love technology, don’t have a cable TV, shop online, text with my buddies, value quality, eat healthily, fitness-focused, embrace diversity, never owned a luxury bag.
In my 9–5 life, I am a digital water expert. The line of business I serve is not sexy. I won’t tire you with that. If you choose to learn more about what I do during the workday, visit my LinkedIn profile and connect.
English is my 3rd language. No joking, it is. I am fluent in three languages and can grasp another two. I blog only in English, don’t ask me why.
Why do I write on Medium?
According to Business Insider, Millennials are the savviest, best-educated generation to date. My dream as a kid was to go to film school and become a movie scriptwriter, but you know parents had a say in my choices (read about my career journey here). Instead, I studied Civil Engineering.
From the age of six till recently, the only place I wrote were my journals. I never even imagined that I could be a writer one day. But hey ho, lucky I discovered Medium. It was love at first sight. I pledged I would start blogging here to satisfy my creative appetite. Here I am.
Storytelling is my natural joy. Research is my obsession. All my friends know about it. No dinner can pass without me telling a story on the subject. Conveying the information carries me away and bore people with unnecessary details and precedents. Writing on Medium is a superb way to share my stories with the world without driving my family and friends up the wall.
What do I write about?
My key topics are work, career, mental health, wealth, change, financial independence and travel. I love to include practical examples from my experiences or the people surrounding me. Opinion pieces and writing are additional categories I dip my toes in.
I don’t do relationships, religion, politics or parenting articles. It feels too personal.
In the future, I would love to publish a book or two. The journey to grow as a creator is long and painful. My mentor told me once — bold people get noticed. Hell yes, bring it on. I will learn, try, fail, review, redo, suck it up again and again till one day I succeed. My goal 4 months ago was to be published in The StartUp, and it seemed unreachable. Done and dusted!
Recommendations
I employ several tools to edit, validate and manage my blogging hobby. I use all of them personally and recommend them based on my experience. Below are affiliate links to my favourite ones. Why? I am trying to raise some money to cover the writing app subscriptions and upgrade my workstation for a better one.
Apps:
- Grammarly — for basic grammar and punctuation. A free option is available.
- ProWritingAid — for repeats, echos, overused words, transitions, structure and readability. A free app is available.
- Wise Bank Account — for collecting payments related to writing (as I need to declare tax on it, it is so much easier to have a separate multi-currency account).
Books:
- Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert T. Kiyosaki — outdated but excellent book to understand the basics of what rich people think.
- Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss — a fantastic book on negotiation. Everyone should read it.
- Atomic Habits by James Clear — every line of this book is just priceless and provides value.
